There are few things worse than a smelly bathroom drain! You come home from a day at work ready for a nice bath or shower and you’re greeted by unpleasant fumes. What is that smell?

The pros at Carroll Plumbing & Heating can help you get to the bottom of your stinky bathroom drains. We’ll help you understand the causes and how to get rid of smelly drains in the bathroom for good.

Causes of Smelly Bathroom Drains

It’s not a pretty conversation but the first step in getting rid of a bad odor is finding its source. And, as you may have guessed, there are plenty of odor sources in bathrooms!

There are two main drains in the bathroom: your shower drain and your sink drain. Let’s take a closer look at these two culprits.

Shower Drains

Yes, the fact of the matter is, shower drains can smell. Things such as hair and soap scum can get caught in your shower pipes and start to smell. This in turn can cause a buildup in bacteria, which only adds to the smelly situation.

If the smell of your shower drain is leaving you cold, you can try this simple DIY technique using baking soda and vinegar:

  • Pour boiling water down the drain followed by half a cup of baking soda
  • Wait for 5 to 10 minutes
  • Pour a cup of white vinegar and another cup of hot water down the drain
  • Cover drain with a drain plug or thick clock
  • Wait for another 5 to 10 minutes
  • Flush again with boiling water

Bathroom Sink Drains

Have you noticed an unpleasant smell coming from your bathroom sink? The reasons for bathroom sink drain odors are often the same as the shower: stray hairs and soap scum in the pipes.

Before you run for the commercial drain cleaners, address clogged drains in your bathroom with a simple flush of boiling water followed by cold water to break up any odor-causing clogs and send them on their way. You can also try the baking soda/vinegar combination to see if that does the trick.

Don’t Let Smelly Drains Win!

It’s understandable when homeowners want to do repairs themselves. The sense of accomplishment and ownership that comes with fixing a problem can be very satisfying.

And there are certainly some DIY solutions that will grant you a reprieve from smelly bathroom drains or fix the problem completely. But, if that smelly drain keeps coming back, you may need to take the next step and call in the professionals.
