Spring Air Conditioning Checklist

Posted on April 1st, 2015 by carrolladmin

With the cold, snowy conditions of this past winter hopefully behind us, we’re starting to get a taste of spring in our area.  Longer days, more sunlight and warmer temperatures have most of us shutting down our heating systems, opening the windows and heading for the outdoors.  However, the change in weather and return of warmer air signifies an important time for your air conditioning system. Since it’s just completed several months of consistently pumping heat, it requires some attention and maintenance to ensure it’s ready for cooling season.

Here is a checklist for homeowners to get their air conditioning ready for spring and summer…

First, change the air filters.  This should be a regular, year-round maintenance task for all air conditioning and heating systems.  Replacing or cleaning filters is typically needed every 60-90 days, but a good rule of thumb is if it’s dirty, replace it. During cooling season, most HVAC technicians recommend checking filters once a month.

Now, head outside to the outdoor unit.  Before cleaning in or around it, shut off power.  Brush off the fins, then clean and flush the coils.  Finally, clear the area around the unit of all dirt, leaves and debris.  Re-connect power supply.

Once you’re back inside, turn the thermostat to the cooling setting and test the unit.  Don’t wait until the first sweltering day to start up the air conditioning.  Conduct an A/C test-run on a cool spring day.  Take note of any issues with the speed of the unit, and listen for noise or vibration.  These may indicate a problem needs to be addressed before cooling season.

There are several other tips helpful to improving the efficiency of your cooling system and overall comfort of your home this spring and summer.  Check the rotation of all ceiling fans.  A counterclockwise rotation pushes cool air down to the floor and cools your home more efficiently. Check all windows and doors for drafts where cool air could escape.  Make sure there are strong seals, and re-seal where necessary.
