Bon Air is a suburban area situated in the Southside of Richmond. The family-friendly community is located in desirable Chesterfield County and bordered by the City of Richmond.

Main roadways in Bon Air include West Huguenot and Buford Road, as well as parts of Jahnke Road, Robious Road and Forest Hill Avenue.

Bon Air: Historic and Modern

Bon Air, after the French expression for “good air”, was originally founded as Brown’s Summit after the Brown family farm which was located near the southwest corner of the present-day intersection of Jahnke Road and Brown Road. It was primarily seen as a summer resort town up until the late 1800s.

In the 20th century, as the residential area around Richmond grew, Bon Air evolved into a middle-class neighborhood, occupied year-round versus just being a summer resort. And by the mid-1950s, Bon Air experienced a suburban population boom.

The Bon Air Shopping center was built at Buford and Forest Hill Ave, and subdivisions like Crestwood Farms, Highland Hills, Brighton Green, and Brookwood Estates welcomed new residents. The burgeoning population also resulted in infrastructure and civic amenities being built.

Many of the homes in Bon Air are older and well-established. The majority of residences were built between 1940 and 1969, and a number of them were built between 1970 and 1999. There are also quite a few historic Victorian and Queen Anne homes dating as far back as the late 19th century.

Other architectural styles include older colonials and ranchers, while some of the newer areas of Bon Air feature craftsman and transitional style homes.

Timeless Customer Service and 21st Century Solutions for a Historical Area

As families from the Fan District and other Richmond neighborhoods leave the city in search of affordable housing and better school systems, many settle in the inner suburb of Bon Air with easy access to the city or the West End via the Powhite Parkway and/ or Chippenham Parkway.

Like many of the other communities in the Southside of Richmond, Bon Air boasts a variety of home styles and ages.

Some older residences feature antiquated plumbing and HVAC systems while newer construction may be outfitted with energy efficient, high performance systems and equipment.

Whether you own a home from the 1940’s or one that’s brand new, regular HVAC and plumbing maintenance are critical to system performance and efficiency.
